so you want to learn more about ShyGodwin…

answers in exchange for your soul. no money down! what a steal!

what’s y’all names? and who’s who?

Lee is the one who’s yelling in your face with the mic. Jasmine is the one strumming for her life on guitar.

why the suits?

we are inspired by the queer and genderfluid black artists that came before us who. Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Big Mama Thorton, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Little Richard.

the suits are a nod to sunday’s best. as black people, we are derided for our culture while also being copied by the same people/institutions that profit from our cultural contributions. *TLDR: ask us when you see us.*

want to know more? google it bitch.

What’s ShyGodwin mean?

Jasmine used to make beats and her production name was shygod. (“Shy” came from her getting called shy a lot, though she considers herself reserved rather than shy. And “-god” came from her mother’s maiden name Godwin). We liked how ShyGodwin sounded and chose that. Plus, it sounds like one person’s name and we’re big adherents to the Drumline philosophy: “one band, one sound”.

When’d the band start? And where are y’all from?

ShyGodwin is a pandemic baby, during the lockdown in 2020 we started making music in Lee’s mom’s garage. We were in California at the time and bounced around until we moved back east. Lee’s from California/South Africa and Jasmine’s from South Jersey. We’re based in Philadelphia.

What are your musical influences?

Maybe you should just ask us for an interview at this point. *wink wink*
